Small hill town of Locri, Bivongi, whose territory lies in the Regional Natural Park of the Serre, contains many vestiges of the past, including the superb Norman-Byzantine basilica of St. John Theresti (XI century).

Located in the middle of the Valley Stilaro, Bivongi is a small hill town of Locri (270 m) that developed in medieval times near Stilo, when the Ionian Sea coastal settlements were depopulated for malaria and the barbarian invasions and the population preferred settle inland. Very uncertain etymology of the name: according to some, the country was originally called "Boubukes", ie land of oxen or according to others, a land where the silkworm breeding (rearing, in fact, first introduced by Byzantine monks, was thriving business until the early twentieth century), for others the name indicates "the place where the iron is tempered," referring to the rich mining area. In 1094 Count Roger gave Bivongi at the Certosa di Serra S. Brown, whose jurisdiction ended during the French decade (Murat, in fact, abolished in 1808 the diocese serres merged with those of Gerace). Like other countries in the Valley Stilaro even Bivongi advantage of the mineral resources of the subsoil (rich in galena, molybdenum and chalcopyrite), feeding the metal pole of the area until the mid-twentieth century. Bivongi (which gave birth to one of the most promising students Solimena, Thomas Martini, a talented painter whose works adorn many eighteenth-century churches of Calabria and central Italy) is situated along the slope of the valley of Mount Consolino that beset and majestic above it, surrounded by green terraced hills, where olive trees and vineyards thrive. Characteristic of the old part of town that closed between the mountains and the course Stilaro, was forced to grow in height. Steep, winding streets are lined with very tall houses that lean against each other, reserve glimpses where bold arcs combine buildings that face each other, opposite sides of the same street or the maze of narrow alleys and lanes suddenly opens in plazas and squares of yesteryear. Renowned food and wine, among the products of which deserves particular mention the DOC Bivongi. Many, then, the historical-cultural landscape, including it should be noted, first, the magnificent Byzantine Basilica of St.-Norman John Theresti (XI century), which became the most important center Basilian Calabria, with a large library and a famous scriptorium. Several, including the examples of industrial archeology: mills, power plants, old mines, abandoned spas, the largest Eco-museum of the Forges and foundries Calabria. Worthy of note are the museum of art and of civilization "to Lumera." It should be noted, finally, the protected area of the Regional Natural Park of the Serre (in whose boundaries lies Bivongi), where you can admire the beautiful waterfall of Marmara, with his jump of over 110 meters, is among the highest of Italy.
