Defined by Diodorus Siculus as "the most famous shrines in southern Italy, one dedicated to Persephone is one of the most important places of worship for the wealth of the West greek votive deposits that have yielded thousands of artifacts is so important that locally produced. Located at the foot of the hill Mannella on a kind of long, narrow terrace supported by a retaining wall built with blocks of sandstone, the shrine was identified and explored by the archaeologist Paolo Orsi between 1908 and 1912. Did not insist in the sacred temple monuments but a small building, equipped with a square hole under the floor, dating back perhaps in the second half of the fifth century BC structure, interpreted as thesauros, that is as small temple for offerings of particular value, had Nearby several votive deposits that have proved among the most interesting and richest in the world the Magna-greek. Bears identified the small building with the famous holy shrine of Persephone, but many archaeologists doubt of that identification as it considers that the building is only a suburban chapel which, although dedicated to Persephone, queen of the underworld, had no links with the main temple . From the votive deposits came to light numerous relics, including statues and reliefs of clay, figurative ceramics, jewelry and personal ornaments, including precious metals, weapons and bronze vessels, tools, coins, mirrors, ivory, and several other items in copper and gold, all aged between the eighth and third centuries BC Of unusual interest in the famous terra-cotta reliefs referred pinakes, that is, votive tablets, which, with their depictions in bas-relief, representing one of the most important examples of cults relevant to the Magna Graecia and religiosity. Matrices produced by thousands of copies and donated as votive offerings to the queen of the dead, perhaps as part of rites of passage of girls in the vicinity of the wedding, represent, in most cases, the abduction of the maiden Persephone, daughter of the goddess of fertility, by Hades, god of the underworld, but there are also representations relating to Aphrodite. Several pinakes then depict scenes or acts related to the rites of marriage, such as the preparation of the girl as she prepares for marriage
